SEGMENT ONE – 8:15 a.m.

GUEST: Michelle Conceison, new chair of the MTSU Recording Industry Department

TOPIC: Her new role and the Recording Industry Department celebrating its 50th anniversary this year

As new chair of Middle Tennessee State University’s Recording Industry Department, Michelle Conceison brings a strong mix of real-world experience and heart of a teacher to lead an innovative department celebrating a half-century of existence this year.

Named to her new role this semester to helm the highly touted program, Conceison is a business owner and artist manager who’s had artists sell out world tours while also teaching the future of the music industry how to promote such concerts well.

She’s also had artists have top albums and radio singles while teaching her students how to manage such talent — she’s always been an educator at heart.

Conceison earned her bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and her MBA from Simmons University, both located in Boston. She began teaching as an adjunct professor in the recording industry in 2018, though she has been teaching in some capacity — whether in the classroom or on the softball field — since she was in college.

She takes over a department celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, a golden tribute to a highly regarded program whose alumni have produced an impressive haul of Grammy gold and many other accolades across all facets of the music industry.

The department recently held a special anniversary celebration the National Museum of African American Music, located in the heart of downtown Nashville, for alumni, students, staff, advisors, and faculty who have helped shape the department into what it is today.

Founded in 1973 with just two professors and one studio, the department has been at the forefront of shaping the music industry and educating the next generation of recording professionals for five decades.

Today, the department has grown to more than two dozen professors, 1,400 students, 13 high-end facilities that include several recording studios, multiple labs and a songwriting center.

MTSU’s Recording Industry Department trains song creators and performers in its Commercial Songwriting Program, experts in recording live music and audio in its Audio Production Program, and music entrepreneurs, including managers and publishers, in its Music Business Program.

SEGMENT THREE – 8:45 a.m.

GUEST: Dr. Charlotte Scott-Moore, director of the Ann Campbell Early Learning Center at MTSU

TOPIC: The upcoming 2024 “Saddle-Up” FUN-draiser on Saturday, April 20, at the MTSU Tennessee Livestock Center

Resident should mark their calendars for the 17th annual “Saddle Up” FUN-draiser event on Saturday, April 20, to support Middle Tennessee State University’s Ann Campbell Early Learning Center

Local families are invited to mosey over to the MTSU Tennessee Livestock Center, at 1720 Greenland Drive, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 20 to kick off the morning with a light breakfast from Donut Country and Purity Dairy followed by a center full of activities.

Pick up tickets at $15 per family at the door or online at https://tinyurl.com/syfu3xp4. Proceeds will continue to fund the center’s over four decades of work providing an inclusive environment for children 12 months to kindergarten age to learn and explore together through developmentally appropriate play activities.

Activities will sprawl across the livestock arena and include performers like Moozie the Cow, who teaches her audience about the importance of kindness and empathy; an exhibit from the local Discovery Center at Murfree Spring; a close encounter with the MTSU lunar rover and more. There will also be a silent auction available throughout the event packed with child and family themed items.

“These funds will help with the maintenance of our wheelchair-accessible outdoor playground, hiring additional support staff, and obtaining high-quality and developmentally appropriate learning materials,” center Director Charlotte Scott-Moore said.

Described as “the very best place for young children with and without disabilities to engage in exceptional early childhood learning experiences,” on its website, the center also functions as a training site for more than 200 college students each year. Students receive hands-on, in-classroom training and observation opportunities that range from eight-hour observations to internships that last 80 hours or more, and, in exchange, the center receives high-quality staffing in their classrooms as students interact with, play alongside and support the children.
