Americans as far south as Alabama and Northern California and right here in Rutherford County have been treated to a show of the northern lights or aurora borealis this weekend.

Officials say it's from a powerful geomagnetic storm from the sun which reached Earth. The sun storm prompted government forecasters to warn of potential disruptions to communications systems, the power grid and satellite operations, but it could also put on a fantastic light display in the night sky.

Areas dark and cloud free with relatively low urban light pollution may get to see a fairly impressive aurora display.
