Early on July 20, 2024, at approximately 1:45 AM, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office in Kentucky responded to a serious accident near the 32-mile marker on the eastbound side of the Bluegrass Parkway. Dispatch informed deputies en route that a vehicle had struck a tree and was on fire.

Upon arrival, deputies found a fully engulfed vehicle fire about 40 yards off the roadway in a wooded area. The driver, a 19-year-old male from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was discovered near the edge of the roadway.

The investigation revealed that the vehicle, a black 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, was traveling east on the parkway when it veered into the median. The driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to cross both lanes, leave the roadway, and collide with an earth embankment on the outside shoulder. The vehicle then rolled several times before coming to rest in a tree line, where it caught fire.

Nelson County EMS provided immediate medical care to the driver, who sustained severe injuries. He was airlifted to U of L Hospital for further treatment. Fatigue is believed to have contributed to the accident.

The North East Nelson Fire Department extinguished the fire and managed traffic control, as well as the helicopter landing zone.
