MURFREESBORO, TN – UPDATE – A minivan took down a utility pole while traveling on S. Church Street Monday afternoon (8/5/2024). The vehicle then went under the canopy at Mapco and slammed to a stop when it hit a gas pump.
Murfreesboro Police diverted northbound traffic onto Middle Tennessee Boulevard, as debris and power lines blocked all inbound lanes at the railroad viaduct. The gridlock, which began at noon, continued into the drive-home time frame on Monday.
According to the MPD, the incident started when the driver of the vehicle traveling on South Church Street lost control and ran into the gas station parking lot. Once in the lot, the motorist struck a utility pole, then a parked car, and finally the gas pump. When first responders arrived, the gas pumps were completely shut down. Thankfully, the driver only sustained minor injuries, but the damage appeared to be costly.
Murfreesboro Police are now trying to determine what caused the driver to lose control and crash.
Repairing the utility pole took crews hours. Workers had to replace the downed pole and the connecting power lines, while Mapco officials began repairs on the damaged gas pumps on Monday.
Paramedics from Murfreesboro Fire-Rescue and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services were on the scene within seconds and helped the injured driver.
