RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) has revealed that last year saw a concerning 905 crashes in school zones across the state. Determined to reduce that figure, the THP, alongside local law enforcement, is ramping up efforts to enhance safety as the new school year begins.

In Rutherford County, the first half day of school kicked off on Wednesday, with a full day following on Thursday. As students return to their routines, authorities are closely monitoring traffic incidents, especially those near schools. So far this year, Rutherford County has recorded 5,170 crash reports overall, a significant figure that includes 190 cases of drinking and driving, 309 crashes involving teenage drivers, and 89 incidents where motorists were under the influence of drugs. Among these, 18 crashes involved a school bus directly, and 2 others were indirectly related to school buses, all occurring between January 1 and August 8, 2024.

Looking back at 2023, Rutherford County reported a total of 9,865 crashes. Of these, 383 involved alcohol, 572 involved teenage drivers, and 172 crashes were linked to drug use. School bus-related incidents were also notable, with 30 crashes directly involving buses and 1 indirect case.

While the total number of crashes in Rutherford County is down by 9.43% in 2024 compared to last year, the focus remains on improving safety, particularly in school zones. The combined efforts of the THP and local law enforcement aim to make this school year safer for everyone on the road.
