Smyrna Is Conducting SPECIAL CENSUS--You Can Help!

Smyrna, TN – As more people move into a community the need for fire and police protection increases to serve the additional people. Some newcomers have children, so more schools must be built. More people put more cars on the road and the streets wear-out and must be repaired. GROWTH COSTS MONEY, and it’s paid for by tax dollars.

The Town of Smyrna is conducting a SPECIAL CENSUS to prove that the population is more than 53,070 from the official 2020 census. In fact, estimates show that Smyrna’s current population should be 58,725. That’s an increase of 5,655 persons. That number alone is the size of many good-sized cities in the area.  The Town of Smyrna is growing at a rate of 2.28% annually.

To get the funds to cover the expense of adding more schools, making road improvements, hiring more emergency responders and more—you either increase local taxes or prove that your population has increased and as a result, your share of Tennessee’s tax pie has increased.

The Town of Smyrna is conducting a special census of all town residents to ensure we receive our fair share of State Shared Tax dollars. State Shared Taxes are distributed to municipalities throughout Tennessee based on each town's population.

If the special census results show that we have exceeded our 2020 census population numbers, the town's state revenue will increase. This increase directly benefits our community, helping to fund our Police and Fire Departments, build parks, repair our roads and public works, and recruit new retail and industrial businesses.

All we need is the address and the first and last name of everyone residing in the household, including anyone living away (college students, military, etc.). The information collected will be kept confidential and will ONLY be used by the Town of Smyrna for the Special Census. Your information will not be shared, sold, rented, or given to any other entity or business.

Completed paper forms may be returned to Smyrna Town Hall at 315 S. Lowry Street.

Please help us keep our taxes low, continue to provide essential services, and increase our quality of life in Smyrna by doing your part and completing the census!
