Murfreesboro Man Dies in a Silo Accident in South Dakota

(VOLGA, SD) -- Two workers, including a Murfreesboro man, lost their lives while repairing a silo. It happened Saturday (September 7th) near Volga, South Dakota.

Fifty-one year old Larry Dalzell of Murfreesboro and 41-year old Randi Vandekieft of Warner Robins, Georgia, died while repairing the roof of an 80-foot silage silo. They became trapped inside under unknown circumstances and are believed to have been overcome with toxic gas.

According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene around 11:25 a.m. last Saturday. Despite efforts by first responders, both men were pronounced dead at the scene. They were both employed by Heartland Tank, Inc.

Dalzell, a local business owner of Dalzell Tank Construction, leaves behind a wife and four children. In response to the tragedy, a friend has set up an online fundraiser to assist his family with expenses.
