Former TBI Director Mark Gwyn Remembered for a Life of Service and Dedication

Murfreesboro, TN – Last month, WGNS shared the news of the passing of former Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Director Mark Gwyn, who died at the age of 61. Gwyn, a McMinnville native and graduate of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), spent over three decades in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to become one of the most respected leaders in the state's criminal justice system.

Mark Gwyn’s career in law enforcement began in 1985 as a patrol officer in his hometown. Three years later, he joined the TBI as a special agent in the Criminal Investigation Division. His dedication and leadership led to his promotion to Executive Officer in 1996 and later to Assistant Director of the Forensic Services Division. In 2004, he became the first African-American to serve as TBI Director, a position he held until his retirement in 2018.

As TBI Director, Gwyn played a pivotal role in the state's fight against the illegal drug trade, particularly methamphetamine production, working closely with Governor Phil Bredesen’s Meth Task Force. Throughout his career, he remained deeply connected to Rutherford County and Murfreesboro, frequently returning for investigations, arrests, and press conferences on key criminal cases.

A proud alumnus of MTSU, Gwyn was honored as the Distinguished African-American Alumni of the Year in 2006 and received the Distinguished Alumni Award for professional achievement in 2010. His work left an indelible mark on the state's law enforcement and justice systems.

This weekend, family, friends, and colleagues will gather to celebrate Mark Gwyn’s life and legacy. A Celebration of Life ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 14th, at 2 p.m. CT. The service will be live-streamed for those across Tennessee and beyond who wish to pay their respects.

Mark Gwyn will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his unwavering commitment to justice and public safety.

The service begins at 2pm CT Saturday, September 14th.
