DAVIDSON COUNTY, TN - In Nashville, it’s not every day that a fanny pack causes this much commotion. But Metro Police’s recent discovery of a belly bag brimming with illegal goodies has landed two men behind bars, proving once again that crime in Music City is often more colorful than any honky-tonk sign.
The saga began earlier this week when Metro detectives spotted two men sitting suspiciously in a Honda Accord at a gas station on Linbar Drive. No, these weren’t pharmaceutical sales reps doling out free samples to nearby doctors’ offices. These were two convicted felons, Demetris Williams, 31, and Jaylan Johnson, 22, both hailing from West Tennessee. Apparently, the dynamic duo decided to make a quick pit stop in Davidson County—and not for Nashville hot chicken.
After a brief chat with the men—less small talk, more "you’re coming with us"—detectives unearthed an array of illegal gems. A black fanny pack that contained a good time for some, was just part of the case. Along with the bag, police seized two digital scales, four cell phones, a stack of cash that added up to around $5-thousand, and some contraband that would make Walter White from Breaking Bad blush.
Metro Detectives uncovered an assortment of drugs, including marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl pills. Fentanyl is an opioid so potent, even a small dose can be deadly. Authorities also confiscated MDMA, a drug more affectionately known as Ecstasy or Molly. The DEA warns that street-made ecstasy often includes a "mystery mix" of substances, from meth to caffeine, making each dose a potentially fatal lottery ticket.
Speaking of lotteries, detectives also seized not one, but two Powerball tickets. Unfortunately Tennessee folks, very seldom does anyone actually win the big jackpot locally. In fact, there have only been about 7 Powerball winning tickets claimed in Tennessee, whereas states like Missouri and Indiana have both recorded over 30 Powerball winners.
Police didn’t stop at drugs—they also recovered a Taurus handgun and a tricked-out Shark AR-15, both locked and loaded. Evidently, these gentlemen weren’t just dreaming of hitting it big in Powerball; they appeared to be well-prepared for a more hands-on approach to fortune.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) notes that around 80% of crimes in the state have some sort of drug-related connection, and this bust fits right into that statistic. As the dust settles, Williams and Johnson are now cozying up in one of Davidson County’s finest correctional facilities, while Metro detectives celebrate another fanny-pack-fueled victory. Keep in mind the two are innocent until proven guilty and will have their day in court in the near future.
Whether it was luck, intuition, or just good police work, Metro PD unzipped a whole lot of trouble with that belly bag—reminding Tennesseans that sometimes, the jackpot isn't gold, but instead a one-way ticket to jail. After confirming on Thursday, both suspects have remained behind bars since their initial arrest this past Tuesday.
