REMINDER: Rutherford County Hazardous Waste Collection 8AM-Noon This Saturday

Nov 01, 2024 at 07:00 am by WGNS

This Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. until noon, residents are invited to participate in a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection event at the Murfreesboro Solid Waste Department located at 4765 Florence Road. The collection is open to everyone, regardless of residency in the county.

This collection offers a safe way to dispose of hazardous household items like cleaning fluids, pesticides, swimming pool chemicals, and more. TDEC Commissioner David Salyers emphasized the importance of such events, stating, “We want it to be convenient for Tennesseans to recycle household hazardous waste, and this collection service is a great way to show that commitment. We encourage Tennesseans to participate.”

Household hazardous waste includes materials that are flammable, toxic, reactive, or corrosive and should not be mixed with regular trash. Examples include cleaning agents, pesticides, mercury thermometers, fluorescent lamps, lithium batteries, aerosols, medications, and used needles (in sturdy containers). Items not accepted are ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, electronics, and empty containers.

To safely transport items to the site, place materials in sturdy, newspaper- or plastic-lined boxes in your vehicle's trunk or truck bed, away from children and pets.

While household waste disposal is free, Very Small Quantity Generator Waste (from businesses, schools, farms, etc.) incurs a fee and requires an appointment. For more details or to schedule a drop-off for business waste, call (615) 643-3170.
