MURFREESBORO, TN - For nearly 40 years, Toot’s Good Food and Fun has been more than just a spot for wings and burgers—it’s been a cornerstone of community support. For over 12 of those years, the local restaurant and School Resource Officers (SROs) from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office have partnered to bring smiles to children in need throughout the area. This holiday season, the beloved Murfreesboro restaurant is once again joining forces with the Sheriff’s Office to make Christmas brighter for local children through the Shop with a Sheriff program.
The fundraiser, set for Tuesday, Dec. 3, will be held at the three Murfreesboro Toot’s locations. Between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., diners can enjoy their favorite meals while contributing to a cause that has brought holiday joy to countless children over the years. Last year, this initiative raised an incredible $17,000 in just three hours – all in one evening, demonstrating the power of a generous community, a positive atmosphere and a great program.
Describing the experiences of children participating in the special shopping expedition, SRO Sgt. Dustin Cox emphasized the vital role Toot’s plays in the program, suggesting without it, “...they would not get Christmas because of the economy,” the SRO continued, “This is an opportunity for them to buy what they want, and the SROs help them get what they need.” Highlighting the heartwarming purpose of the program, the sergeant added, “It allows the children to experience what Christmas is like.” Without the support of the fundraiser at Toot’s, many of these children would go without gifts due to financial hardships.
Funds raised will enable 35 elementary and middle school students to shop for Christmas gifts alongside School Resource Officers who serve as role models year-round. For the officers, this event goes beyond gift-giving—it’s about building relationships and creating lasting memories.
As 2024 comes to a close and 2025 begins, Toot’s will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Just as it was four decades ago, the restaurant remains steadfast in its commitment to giving back to the community that has supported it over the years. Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh echoed this sentiment, stating, “They are true community supporters of the children and the Sheriff’s Office.” The Sheriff and others within the department commend Toot’s dedication, describing it as truly inspiring.
Wade Hayes, who was one of the first managing partners of Toot's in the 1980s, told WGNS... Around 20 years ago, Hayes transitioned from being a managing partner to purchasing and expanding Toot’s Restaurant. Today, his son Nick carries on the legacy, shaping the company’s growth and vision as the president of Toot’s. Nick expressed gratitude for the opportunity to host the event for the SROs. “The feeling that it gives us to help these kids is indescribable,” Nick said.
“Over the years, this fundraiser has brought Christmas joy to so many households. We cherish the opportunity to be a part of Shop with a Sheriff and are so appreciative of the RCSO for what they do for our community.” - Nick Hayes, President of Toot's
With the opening of another local school in the Blackman area next school year and the continued expansion of the Rutherford County School system, partnerships like this one demonstrate the enduring strength of a community united by compassion. Whether it’s a plate of wings or a contribution to Shop with a Sheriff, every gesture makes a difference in a child’s life.
This holiday season, Toot’s invites you to be part of something special. Join them on Tuesday evening, Dec. 3 to make a child’s Christmas unforgettable—because together, Rutherford County can make spirits bright.
