Rutherford County, TN - As winter temperatures plunge, homeless residents in Rutherford County are receiving vital support from the community. Sleeping bags, blankets, and hand warmers were collected during a donation drive at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, an effort aimed at assisting the homeless through the Murfreesboro Cold Patrol.

In 2020, at least 322 people in Rutherford County were counted as homeless, with nearly 48% lacking any form of shelter. By 2024, that number had risen to 367, highlighting the growing need for community action. Generous donations, like the recent $1,000 contribution to the Cold Patrol from Believers Faith Fellowship, play a significant role in providing relief to those in need.

The Sheriff’s Office hosted the “Blanket the Cold, Warm the Community” drive, where contributors donated three truckloads of blankets, sleeping bags, and Hot Hands warmers. Community Services Sgt. Gary Herron expressed gratitude, noting that the items will provide warmth and comfort during the harsh winter months. “Together, we are making a difference, and your kindness is truly warming our community,” said Herron.

The Murfreesboro Cold Patrol, a nonprofit organization focused on addressing homelessness through outreach, advocacy, and resource support, is working diligently to find permanent housing for those in need. Executive Director Jordan Dickerson and Cold Patrol team member Liza Blalock recently received the donated items to distribute to local homeless residents.

For those needing immediate shelter, the Coldest Nights emergency shelters in downtown Murfreesboro continue to operate when temperatures drop below 32 degrees. Men can seek shelter at First Baptist Church on Vine Street, while women are welcomed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at College and Academy Streets. Meals are served from 6:00 to 6:45 PM at both locations.

The collective effort of local residents, churches, and organizations underscores the strength of the community’s commitment to aiding the less fortunate, providing warmth, comfort, and hope during the coldest nights of the year.
