"Celebrations like these are truly what makes VA the best agency to work for," said Daniel Dücker, TVHS Executive Director. "It's not every day we can honor the legacy of an American World War I hero. It is a privilege to host this celebration of life with the York family."

Born Dec. 13, 1887, in Pall Mall, Tenn., Alvin York was drafted into World War I as a private in the Army serving from 1917 – 1919. York earned the Medal of Honor and the French Croix de Guerre for his heroic actions on Oct. 18, 1918, where he helped capture 132 Germans in the midst of a firefight.

In 1985, the Murfreesboro Veterans’ Administration Hospital was renamed to Alvin C. York Veterans’ Administration Medical Center in honor of York’s gallant actions.

York’s name and legacy proudly lives on in the halls of VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, which provides health care to 141,000 Veterans at 23 locations across 75 counties in middle Tennessee, southern Kentucky, and northern Georgia.
