MURFREESBORO - The holiday spirit took a hit in Rutherford County when nearly 100 Christmas trees were stolen from Boy Scout Troop 197’s lot in the middle of the night.
For 19 years, Troop 197, chartered by Fellowship United Methodist Church, has relied on their Christmas tree sales as their sole fundraiser, supporting year-round activities and events for their scouts. This year’s efforts were dashed when thieves disabled the lot’s security cameras and made off with 98 trees, amounting to a loss of approximately $12,000.
The funds from tree sales support camping trips, summer adventures, and character-building activities for the troop. Now, parents may have to cover the shortfall, and some activities may be scaled back.
Despite the setback, the troop remains determined. They still have about 100 trees left to sell before the season ends on December 20th. Located in front of Fellowship United Methodist Church on New Salem Highway, the lot welcomes anyone in need of a tree.
Community Support Pours In
The theft has also highlighted the generosity of the Murfreesboro community. Donations have poured in to help the troop recover their losses. Scout leaders have expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support.
"The scouts are seeing what a caring community we live in," said a troop representative on their Facebook page. "We’ve now recovered our losses, and any additional donations will go toward the scouts’ camping trips and high adventures."
