RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - In the great state of Tennessee, you will have a little more jingle in your pocket as you begin to mingle for the holidays. The miraculous news that gas prices have dropped a whole three cents over the past week are the reason for all that extra change in your drawers, now that the price of regular unleaded is a low $2.64 per gallon, which is six cents cheaper than it was just a month ago. Clearly, the extra pennies you’re saving on refueling this week are the change you really needed this holiday season.
To sprinkle a little more festive joy, let’s talk about the sheer extravagance of a whopping 11-cent drop in the price of regular unleaded over the past three weeks that Rutherford County has experienced! Prices fell to an average of $2.58 per gallon, as of December 16, 2024, from their previous robust price of $2.69 per gallon in the Murfreesboro/Smyrna area.
Gas prices in some neighboring counties are reportedly even lower. In Shelbyville, for instance, residents can rejoice as prices sit at a mind-blowing $2.50 per gallon. That’s just a little reminder of how history repeats itself since Bedford County folks were paying $2.74 three weeks ago—19 cents more!
Now, let’s not forget our friends over in Cannon County, where a sense of nostalgia keeps prices lingering at $2.77—19 cents higher than the enlightened citizens of Murfreesboro are currently paying. Meanwhile, folks in Lebanon and Mt. Juliet find themselves just one shiny penny lower at an average of $2.57. Talk about being on the cutting edge of price drops!
And here we are, yet again, with the real champions of gas pricing: Williamson County. Known for their dazzling fuel prices, they somehow manage to give their gas a sprinkle of gold dust, averaging an astonishing $3.01 per gallon. They’ve been holding the contemptible honor of having the highest gas prices in Tennessee for a full year now. But who doesn't love a little luxury with their fuel?
If you’re contemplating driving to your nearest “cheaper” gas station, you might want to think twice. The average small to mid-sized sedan holds about 12 gallons of gas. Filling up in the cheap seats of Henry County will cost you $29.52, while a pit stop in Williamson County will set you back an eye-watering $36.12! So much for the savings, right? The max you’ll save is $6.
Premium gas prices currently sit at a cool $3.49 per gallon. If you thought you were living large last year when it was $3.56 per gallon, think again!
Diesel: Those who drive a diesel hybrid are sitting pretty with better fuel economy and lower fuel prices per gallon. Current diesel prices are sitting at $3.24 per gallon throughout Tennessee. Last year, diesel was .54-cents higher at $3.78 per gallon.
