SELMER, TN – The family of Sgt. Rick Finley, a dedicated officer tragically killed in the line of duty, has received a heartfelt donation from the Secret Santa fund in Rutherford County, showcasing the power of community support during the holiday season.
Each year, Secret Santa and Mrs. Claus share the Christmas spirit by donating funds to sheriff’s deputies, who then distribute the money to deserving individuals and families. This year, Patrol Sgt. Robert Horne revealed that fellow day shift Patrol Sgt. John Wauchek proposed a special initiative: to pool the deputies' share of the Secret Santa fund to assist the Finley family.
Sgt. Finley, who was a beloved member of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office, was working part-time for the Selmer Police Department when he was fatally shot on December 14 while responding to a suspicious person complaint. The 39-year-old officer, who had devoted 13 years to law enforcement, leaves behind his wife, Amber, and three children, with another expected in March.
Upon hearing the proposal, Secret Santa and Mrs. Claus quickly agreed, demonstrating their commitment to supporting those in need during the holidays. Day shift deputies generously contributed their share of the Secret Santa funds, allowing them to make a significant impact on the grieving family.
Sgt. Horne delivered the funds to Selmer Police Department Lt. Ted Roberts, who graciously accepted the donation on behalf of the Finley family. Lt. Roberts, who served in Rutherford County prior to his tenure with the Selmer Police Department, expressed appreciation for the community's compassion and support during this difficult time.
This donation reflects not just the spirit of Christmas but the camaraderie in law enforcement and our community’s dedication to helping one another. The act of kindness serves as a reminder of the profound impact that collective generosity can have, especially for the families of those who have sacrificed while serving others.
As the community remembers Sgt. Finley's contributions, this donation stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of his service and the support that surrounds his family during their time of need.
