Tennessee - Distracted driving is exploding with the population in Tennessee. Whether its talking on your cell phone, making changes to your source of entertainment in the car, to simply playing with some of the new gadgets that are in today's vehicles--the act of driving while engaged in activities that divert the driver’s attention away from the road is a major cause of crashes! This dangerous behavior is categorized into three forms: cognitive, visual, and manual. Texting and driving is particularly hazardous as it involves all three types of distractions.
Cognitive distraction occurs when the driver’s mind is not focused on driving. Examples include talking to passengers, thinking about stressful issues, or listening to loud music.
Visual distraction happens when the driver is not looking at the road ahead. Examples include searching for items in the vehicle, looking down at a GPS device, or watching a video on a mobile phone.
In addition, manual distraction occurs when the driver takes one or both hands off the wheel. Examples include eating, drinking, reaching backward, or handling a mobile device or accessory built into the vehicle.
