MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee State University and Murfreesboro community is mourning the loss of Charles Richard “Chuck” Akers, Jr., a former standout baseball player who passed away on Saturday (December 28) at the age of 43.

Chuck grew up in Murfreesboro, where his love for baseball began. A graduate of Oakland High School, Chuck helped lead his team to back-to-back state championships in 1999 and 2000 before continuing his athletic career at MTSU. Chuck's dedication to baseball extended beyond his playing days. He later became an influential coach with BC Athletics, where he used the sport as a platform to instill character and values in young players. His approach emphasized virtue and personal growth over simply winning games, creating a positive impact on countless lives.

Away from the diamond, Chuck was a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca “Blair” Akers, and their two children, Layne and Nori. Chuck also leaves behind his parents, Charlie and Susan Akers, and his siblings, Stacy McRoberts and Laura Akers, as well as a large extended family.

Chuck was the founder of Summit Concrete in Murfreesboro and an active member of Fellowship Bible Church, embodying his faith in every aspect of his life.

Visitation for Chuck will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery. In honor of Chuck’s passion for MTSU baseball, donations may be made to the Blue Raider Athletic Association (MTSU Baseball) or New Vision Church’s Student Ministry, with gifts designated in his memory.

Chuck Akers will be remembered as a beloved athlete, coach, husband, father, business leader and mentor whose influence extended far beyond the baseball field.
