La Vergne, TN - All La Vergne city offices will be closed Friday (1/10/2025) due to the winter storm forecast for the mid-state. Emergency services and public works crews are ready to skeep the community through the expected snow storm.

As many as five trucks will be utilized by the public works department to clear main and secondary roads as well as spread salt. No subdivisions will be plowed or salted unless deemed necessary by emergency service personnel. A map is available on the City’s website of roads that are expected to receive salt and see snow plows once the snow begins accumulating.

The city recommend following various pages on social media, such as the City’s police and fire departments, City Hall, Public Works, and others, including trusted news and weather sources.

Driving Safety  While employees from streets, sewer, water, and fleet will be doing their best to clear the roads, it is recommended that residents stay home unless absolutely necessary. If residents do need to get out, drivers are encouraged to go slow and steady. If you see a snow plow, slow down and give the truck plenty of room to work. Try to avoid steep hills or shaded areas, and keep kids who are out playing in the snow off the roads.

When driving, keep a few things in mind:
  • Remove all snow and ice from vehicles before driving
  • Pack an emergency kit with food and water to last 72 hours, extra blankets, and charged power banks for cell phones
  • Increase following distance
  • Avoid sudden stops
  • Pump the breaks instead of slamming on them if you lose control
Preparing Your Home  Prepare your homes for low temperatures by opening sink cabinet doors to keep pipes warm and dripping faucets to keep water from freezing. It’s also recommended home owners cover their outdoor water spigots with commercial faucet covers or homemade covers. An easy way to insulate a spigot is by wrapping it with old towels or t-shirts, securing it tightly with plastic bags, and sealing with duct tape to keep moisture from freezing around the spigot.

If your pipes do freeze, turn off the main water supply valve at your house, then open the faucet connected to the frozen pipe to relieve pressure. Try to thaw the pipes with a space heater or hair dryer, applying heat slowly and carefully. Do not use open flames to thaw pipes. Once thawed, check for leaks. If you cannot successfully thaw your pipes, contact a plumber immediately.

People and Pets  The City also recommends bringing in your pets and checking on your neighbors and shut-ins. Wash your pets feet when they come inside, as salt can dry out and damage their sensitive paw pads.

Health and Personal Safety  If you plan to spend time outside enjoying the snow, make sure that you are properly dressed, keeping exposed skin to a minimum and replacing any clothing that gets wet as soon as possible. Limit time outdoors, taking regular breaks inside to warm up. Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia and seek medical attention if necessary.

Using Generators and Space Heaters  Use extreme caution when operating generators and space heaters. Never use generators in enclosed areas, keep them dry, and at least 20 feet away from doors, vents, and windows. Always turn off and unplug space heaters when you leave the room and plug them directly into the wall, never into an extension cord or power strip.

City Business  Citizens needing to conduct business such as paying their water bills, property tax bills, or city court fees during the office closures can do so online at https://www.lavergnetn.gov/185/online-city-payments.

The City will continue to keep the La Vergne City Hall Facebook page up to date with pertinent information relating to La Vergne, including any additional office closures, if needed.
