Murfreesboro, TN - There was an extra police presence at Central Magnet School Friday morning (1/17/2025) after dispatchers received a call from a man claiming to ‘hear voices that there may a school shooting’. Now the county has taken over the investigation from the City.
Central Magnet placed on a precautionary hold. Additional police were immediately sent to the school as a precaution to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.
Murfreesboro Police PIO Larry Flowers said, "License plate reader (LPR) cameras alerted police to the man’s location. He was detained without incident."
The Rutherford County Sheriffs Office has taken over this case, because it happened on county owned property. Central Magnet School is a part of the Rutherford County School System and therefore the land is county owned. NewsRadio WGNS will share updates on the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office investigation into the Friday morning incidence as soon as it is available.
LPR technology is one of many new tools in the Murfreesboro Police Department's Real Time Crime Center.
Officials explain that License Plate Readers (LPRs) are indeed a significant addition to Real Time Crime Centers. They work by capturing and analyzing license plate information in real time, which can be incredibly useful for law enforcement.
Some key points about their effectiveness include:
-
Rapid Response: LPRs can quickly identify and alert officers to vehicles of interest, such as stolen cars or those associated with criminal activity.
-
Data Integration: They integrate with other technologies in RTCCs, such as security cameras and gunshot sensors, to provide comprehensive situational awareness.
-
Crime Prevention: By monitoring and analyzing data in real time, LPRs help in preventing crimes and improving response times.
-
Case Outcomes: They contribute to better case outcomes by providing crucial evidence and intelligence.
Overall, LPRs enhance the capabilities of the city's new Real Time Crime Center, making it more efficient and effective in maintaining public safety.
