This year's Doris Coady Rutherford County High School Swimming Championships yielded some very predictable results. All of the event finals except one (boy's 500 freestyle) were won by the top seeded swimmer and of course for the fourteenth consecutive year the favored Oakland Patriots hauled home the biggest hardware. In the girls division it was an Oakland tsunami while the boys earned a hard-fought tiltle.
Talent, depth, and big performances fueled the Patriot wave which washed away the opposition. Sophomore Lyndel Laudencia was brilliant in winning both the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle and juniorJackson Brasfield blasted past the competiton in the 100 yard backstroke just to name two of the Patriot standouts. The OIakland depth was without question one of the biggest reasons the Patriots are once again tops in Rutherford County.
"The County Championship is all about depth", says Oakland head coach Drew Brewer. "We had multiple swimmers score points in 15 of the 16 individual events. Our kids have spent the entire season preparing for what they would have to do to win this meet. Their unwavering work ethic and ability to seize opportunities as they arose throughout the meet are what ultimately got the job done."
Since the creation of the Rutherford County High School Swimming Championships in 1989 Oakland has reigned supreme. The Patriots have captured every team title except for a seven year run by Smyrna between 2004 and 2010. With another County championship and a division title on their season success resume, the Patriots will now turn their focus towards the upcoming Region and State meets.
