Murfreesboro, TN - The Rutherford County Sheriffs Office told WGNS News that a local woman received a phone call from an individual impersonating County Correctional Work Center Capt. Jason Smitty. The impersonator was attempting to extort money from the unsuspecting female.

The caller claimed that the woman had two warrants against her, with a bond set at $23,000. He attempted to arrange a meeting to collect the bond money.

Fortunately, the woman, sensing something was amiss, contacted a friend at the Sheriff’s Office and discovered that the call was a scam.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that deputies do not call individuals about arrest warrants, nor do they request bond money over the phone. Residents are advised to hang up immediately on calls of this type.

Stay vigilant and protect yourself from these deceitful tactics. If you encounter a similar situation, remember to verify the information with local authorities before taking any action. Phone the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office at 615-898-7770.
