MCMINNVILLE, TN - In Warren County, Tennessee, a 70-year-old man will appear in court for an arraignment this week after allegedly concocting an elaborate story about being robbed by a man after stopping to assist an unknown woman with vehicle troubles.

According to Sheriff Jackie Matheny and investigators from his office, authorities followed leads throughout the night and into the morning this past Thursday surrounding allegations of an armed robbery. The reported victim, 70-year-old Billy Wayne Fults, Sr.(mugshot above article), told Warren County Sheriff’s deputies he had been robbed at gunpoint by two individuals in the area of Yager and Short Mountain Roads. Fults claimed he was stopped by a female standing in the road, flagging him down. Sheriff’s officials said the victim reported that the female told him her truck had broken down and asked if he could help her. As the victim attempted to assist her, he was approached from behind by a white male who pressed what the victim described as a gun into his back and demanded his money. The Sheriff told followers on social media, “The suspect reached into the victim’s pockets and forcibly retrieved an undisclosed amount of cash.”

As the story continued, Fults claimed that the two suspects fled the scene in a green, 1990s model long-wheelbase Ford truck with damage to the right rear quarter panel. Following the report of the robbery, the Sheriff’s Office warned citizens that the culprits who held up the 70-year-old were considered armed and dangerous, advising the public to exercise extreme caution and remain aware of their surroundings. However, investigators later determined the story to be a complete fabrication.

After the entire scenario of a robbery was deemed to be untrue, the Sheriff’s Office reported, “Mr. Fults gave a full confession to the false allegation prior to his arrest.” On Monday, Fults was charged with attempting to file a false report and was placed behind bars under a $2,000 bond at the Warren County Jail in McMinnville, Tennessee. Fults is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment this week, where he will face General Sessions Judge Ryan J. Moore.
