MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Following a tragic two-car collision on Middle Tennessee Boulevard that resulted in the deaths of two individuals, investigators have arrested a suspect accused of causing the wreck. Ewarth A. Chesney, 50, a resident of Northfield Boulevard in Murfreesboro, has been charged by the Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team with two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated assault (recklessness).
According to reports, Chesney was driving a Nissan Rogue westbound when he collided with a Mazda sedan. At the time of the crash, the female driver of the Mazda was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Middle Tennessee Boulevard. While she survived the incident, two passengers in her vehicle tragically lost their lives. Sylvio Victor, 35, from Antioch, died at the scene, while a 5-year-old child was rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. The young child remained hospitalized for nearly five days before succumbing to her injuries on Saturday, February 1.
A criminal warrant was issued for Chesney on Tuesday (02/04/25) evening, shortly after 5 PM. Chesney was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center at 12:03 AM on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. He remains in custody at this time. The case will be before the Rutherford County Circuit Court.
Meanwhile, the Murfreesboro Police Department is continuing their investigation into the crash, gathering details that a jury will need to understand during court proceedings. This includes examining the moments leading up to the collision - from when Chesney turned over the ignition in his vehicle, to the immediate actions taken after the crash occurred.

Previous Update on Feb. 3, 2025: WGNS has a sad update to a news story we first reported on Monday night, January 27, 2025. The Murfreesboro Police Department now confirms that a total of two deaths have occurred as a result of the two-vehicle auto accident. The second victim to pass away was a 5-year-old child, who was reported to be in “very critical condition” at the end of last week. On Monday, Public Information Officer Larry Flowers confirmed the child died this past weekend.
As previously reported, the wreck occurred on Middle Tennessee Boulevard at Haley Road about 15 minutes before 7 PM on the evening of January 27, 2025. In a preliminary report, authorities stated that the driver of a Nissan Rogue was traveling westbound when it collided with a Mazda sedan, which was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Middle Tennessee Boulevard. The female driver of the Mazda survived the collision, but passenger Sylvio Victor from Antioch was killed. The 35-year-old man died at the scene, while a second passenger, only identified as a 5-year-old, was rushed to the hospital where the child clung to life for nearly five days before succumbing to injuries on Saturday, February 1.
At the scene of the crash, Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue firefighters extricated the child and the female driver from the Mazda. Both were then rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Mr. Victor, who again was a passenger in the Mazda 6 sedan, was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services.
On Monday, police continued to investigate the exact cause of the accident, noting that speed may have played a role. The force of the impact caused the Mazda to spin off the roadway and into a nearby parking lot, where the 4-door sedan came to a final rest against a parked car in the lot of a business along Middle Tennessee Boulevard.
In total, two deaths have been confirmed as a result of the accident in Murfreesboro on January 27, 2025. Both of these fatalities were passengers in the Mazda, which included a 35-year-old man and a 5-year-old child.
