Middle Tennessee: From the bizarre news of the day file, we head to Music City, where authorities have reported some rather "heavy lifting" activities over the past four weeks. Apparently, two men decided that a skid steer loader was just the thing they needed —  but that need would only be filled if they took two trips to haul off the 7,500-pound piece of machinery.

Metro Nashville “Community Crimes” detectives hope to find themselves hot on the trail of the masterminds behind this audacious theft, which took place on January 22 at Casey’s gas station (6418 Centennial Boulevard) near Briley Parkway. Surely, nothing screams “I’m a thief” quite like stealing a piece of construction equipment from a gas station parking lot.

CCTV footage captured the dynamic duo as they sauntered around the gas station—one sporting a trapper-style cold weather hat complete with earmuffs, a hat that looked to be ripped from the pages of a trapper’s magazine cover? The other subject opted for a fashionable camouflage baseball cap adorned with yellow writing.

Witnesses report that our two “gentlemen” also made use of a small white Jeep Patriot, a full-sized extended cab truck, and a white Chevy Suburban (or was it a GMC Yukon?—details, details). Apparently, one of the suspects was so committed to the cause that he made two trips to the gas station: once in the full-sized SUV and then later returning in a "dark-colored" pickup truck that ultimately pulled the skid steer to its new home. One can only wonder what profound conversations these two had during those moonlit drives to return home with their ill-gotten gains.

As if this caper wasn’t golden enough, this skid steer loader was left in plain sight, waiting for its rightful owner to pick it up. But alas, someone beat him to the punch—clearly, someone was in a rush to start their next big landscaping project without waiting for pesky things like permits or the actual ownership of equipment.

The price for this hefty heist? A mere $60,000 to $75,000—pocket change for anyone brave enough to pilfer construction machinery from a gas station.
