Rutherford County, TN – In Tennessee, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Outside of genetics, some of the key risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, smoking, diabetes, obesity, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, and a lack of physical activity. In other words, many of the unhealthy choices we make regarding our food, combined with detrimental habits, can significantly impact our longevity and overall health.

According to CDC, coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease. About 1 in 20 adults aged 20 and older have CAD (about 5%). One study in 2022 showed that about 1 out of every 5 deaths from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) was among adults.

Heart attacks are a very real problem, accompanied by sobering statistics. The American Heart Association reported in 2023 that someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds in the United States. Equally alarming is the fact that about 1 in 5 heart attacks are silent; the damage occurs without the person being aware of it.
