The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance’s (TDCI) Division of Regulatory Boards revealed impressive statistics for 2024, processing 163,496 initial or renewal applications for professional licenses. This marks an increase of 8,559 applications compared to the previous year, showcasing the division's commitment to supporting professionals in Tennessee.

In addition to licensing activities, TDCI addressed 4,467 consumer complaints, conducted 21,032 inspections, and managed an impressive 239,869 customer inquiries through its Customer Service Center, achieving a remarkable 96.15% customer satisfaction rate. “TDCI’s Regulatory Boards Division team embodies our Department’s mission of protecting Tennesseans and empowering professionals,” stated TDCI Commissioner Carter Lawrence. He noted the team's role in ensuring timely licensing services and effectively addressing consumer concerns.

The Division of Regulatory Boards oversees licensing and regulation for over 324,000 Tennesseans through 26 regulatory programs, including the Tennessee Real Estate Commission, the Cosmetology & Barber Examiners Board, and the Board for Licensing Contractors. These programs maintain professional standards, offer consumer education, and expedite complaint resolutions.

In 2024, regulatory board officials highlighted significant progress in enhancing the applicant and licensee experience through various strategic initiatives. The average processing time for initial licensure was reduced to 12.71 days, a 6.01-day improvement from 2023. Additionally, over 90% internet adoption enabled more online applications via the Comprehensive Online Regulatory & Enforcement (CORE) System—providing a user-friendly experience with advanced management tools.

The division celebrated the first full year of its Welcome Center, welcoming nearly 3,000 unique visitors, and gathered valuable customer feedback to refine application processes. TDCI also launched a Special Case Licensure Hub to assist individuals facing unique circumstances in obtaining occupational licenses, while revamping profession pages for consumer self-service.

Leadership changes within TDCI further exemplify its commitment to professional enhancement, with Reid Witcher being promoted to Assistant Commissioner in June and the onboarding of new professionals overseeing major boards later in the year.

TDCI continues to prioritize consumer protection, sharing details about disciplinary actions taken against licensees and working closely with law enforcement to strengthen these initiatives.

As TDCI moves forward, officials encourage Tennesseans in need of assistance to utilize their resources, aiming to maintain its trajectory of progress in professional regulation and consumer service.
