UPDATE: Smyrna Woman Outsmarts Fake Jury Duty Call—Scammer Must Be So Disappointed

Mar 19, 2025 at 12:26 pm by WGNS News

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - Well, it seems like some people will stop at nothing to impersonate a Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputy. A Smyrna woman recently received an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be enforcing jury duty violations. The caller, apparently unaware that the woman had spent the last 40 years in the legal field, told her she had failed to respond to a jury duty notice. (Spoiler alert: She hadn’t.)

In an attempt to add some legitimacy to his call, the scammer informed her he was about to mark her down as a "non-responder," because, apparently, he thought that would strike fear into someone with four decades of experience in law. He then insisted on confirming her address and continued pushing the narrative about a certified letter she supposedly ignored.

Not falling for it, the woman—undoubtedly with decades of wisdom and a solid understanding of how jury duty works—calmly ended the conversation. She hung up. Just like that. Apparently, scammers didn’t get the memo: this wasn’t her first rodeo.

Seeing the situation for what it was, a classic scam attempt, she decided to warn the rest of us. If you happen to get a call claiming you missed jury duty (which you didn’t), just hang up. Don’t give out any personal information. Seriously, just hang up. The scammer might be disappointed, but you’ll still have your information safe and sound.
