Murfreesboro, TN - Rutherford County Property Assessor Rob Mitchell sent out an email on Thursday evening (3/20/2025) posing the question “Should Renters and the Working Poor Deserve to Pay Higher Property Taxes?”

Mitchell explained, “There is currently a plan in place which will fundamentally alter how property taxes are applied to renters. As everyone knows, renters pay property taxes through their rent. There is a movement to raise property taxes on the working poor in order to keep them forever subservient.”

Mitchell’s email has a questionnaire attached, and he noted, “It’s important that Nashville politicians hear your voices and know that you are holding them accountable.”

He concluded, “The justification is that the local government needs more property taxes to fund the government. Rather than allowing people to vote on tax rate changes they want to charge renter property taxes in the same way they tax factories and heavy industry. I ask you, ‘Is this fair?’"
