Murfreesboro, TN - The realigned Butler Drive is now open to traffic following the construction of a new roadway, while the old Butler Drive access to and from Joe B. Jackson Parkway has been closed. Traffic controls are in place to ensure a smooth transition.
Making Way for Buc-ee's
The property excavation began in 2023 to make way for a new 76,245-square-foot Buc-ee’s convenience store and travel center. The facility will feature 120 fueling stations, electric vehicle charging points, and a walking trail. Buc-cee's aims for a 2026 opening date.
Buc-ee’s, already operating in Crossville and Sevierville, expands its footprint to Murfreesboro with this new location at Joe B. Jackson and I-24 (exit 84).
"Inside" The Realignment
The project was approved Dec. 7, 2023 by the Murfreesboro City Council. The Butler Drive realignment project was completed by Moody Excavating, LLC, for approximately $7.4-million. It was funded in the City's FY21 and FY22 CIP budgets. The total project, including design, right-of-way acquisition, engineering, and construction, amounts to $9-million.
The realignment shifts Butler Drive westward, connecting it to Joe B. Jackson Parkway approximately 600 feet from its original intersection. The 0.9-mile project features a three-lane section with curbs, gutters, and sidewalks on both sides. This adjustment, part of the City’s 2040 Major Transportation Plan, aims to mitigate potential traffic issues near interchange ramps and includes a signalized intersection for improved access.
“This realignment alleviates weaving concerns near the interchange ramps and enhances connectivity for motorists and industries,” said Murfreesboro's Public Infrastructure Executive Director Chris Griffith.
Additionally, Elam Road has been reconfigured to accommodate the future Butler Drive intersection with Joe B. Jackson Parkway.
While the old Butler Drive remains accessible for existing properties, it will no longer serve as a public link to Joe B. Jackson Parkway.
