Murfreesboro, TN - Spring was in the air around 10:00 o’clock Friday morning when City of Murfreesboro officials gathered on the 150-acre site for the groundbreaking of Veterans Memorial Park.

Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation’s Executive Director Nate Williams said, “In approximately 18-months, we’ll be able to enjoy this 150-acres of green space complete with walking trails, a destination playground, four large pavilions, pickleball courts and a large outdoor event space for concerts and festivals.”

City officials decided to honor veterans with this facility that will take shape at 4908 Veterans Parkway, near I-840.

Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland read a note from City Councilmember Austin Maxwell that was handed to him just before he went on the stage…

McFarland said, “That’s why this will be known as Veterans Park”.

The name "Veterans Park" was chosen to honor the sacrifices and service of military veterans. Murfreesboro City Council member and veteran Austin Maxwell expressed his hope that the park would remind visitors of the contributions made by the 1 per cent of Americans who have served in the military. Maxwell shared a personal connection to the date, as it marked 19 years since he was wounded in Afghanistan.

The park's name reflects a commitment to recognizing and celebrating the bravery and dedication of veterans and their families. It's a meaningful tribute to those who have defended the nation.

NewsRadio WGNS will keep the community updated on the progress of Veterans Park during the months that lie ahead.
