A cold case in Murfreesboro that dates back to 1977 has yet to be solved. The case revolves around the body of a young man found near an abandoned home on Van Cleave Lane in the Stones River Battlefield area. Because the body was found on what was believed to be federal property, the FBI took over the case.
Victim Stanley Smith was shot twice and his lifeless body was then drug 30-feet behind a line of trees and brush. The case may be drug related.
We are told that after the FBI oversaw the investigation for one week, but later turned it over to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office when it was realized that the body was actually found 6-feet outside of the Stones River Battlefield property line (a federal park).
Sgt. Dan Goodwin with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office told WGNS on Friday (4/4/14)…
Stanley Smith, who lived on Richmond Avenue in Murfreesboro, was 26-years old when he was killed over 37-years ago.
